MCESCHER

I’ve started editing my latest WIP this week.  I finished up the first draft of AURUM on July 4th, and have spent the last five weeks focused on getting Destiny Blues published, preparing GLAMOUR for publication later this fall, reviewing my writing goals for the year and writing (and submitting) short stories. By the time I’ve finished a draft of my manuscript, I’m pretty tired of living in it.  Letting the manuscript cool off for a few weeks is a great way to gain some distance on the story, so that when I go back and take a second look at it, it is easier to spot the holes.  In the past few weeks, more ideas about the story have come to me and I’ve jotted them down.  Now, I can’t wait to start working on them.

I’ve got mixed emotions when it comes to editing. Over the last couple of years I’ve made a concerted effort to improve my skills in editing, and I do feel much more comfortable with my own editing ability now.  I’ve also learned that my early drafts tend to be far too lean, in terms of sensory description, setting, and telling details; so as I go back through my manuscript, I’m looking at each scene as a whole, and adding far more than I’m taking out. For me, the 2nd draft is like re-writing the whole novel all over again. It took me four months to edit the first draft of Destiny Blues, two months for GLAMOUR, and my goal for AURUM is three to four weeks.  Then I’ll send it out to early readers while I start in on the follow-on to Destiny Blues.

Busy, busy, busy.

DESTINY BLUES – Launch Announcement

DESTINY-BLUES-FRONT-COVER-b

Today is the official launch of my urban fantasy novel, DESTINY BLUES.

Amazon:                    Paperback hardcopy

Amazon:                    Kindle Edition

Barnes & Noble:         Nook Edition

Kobo:                        Kobo Edition

Smashwords:             Smashwords Edition

It’s the story of Shore Haven’s favorite meter maid, Mattie Blackman, as she battles the demons of her past and comes to terms with her destiny.

I’m excited to see something I worked on for so long come to print, but I don’t plan to do a lot of pushing of my own work from this site.  I will make publication announcements from time to time, for family, interested friendly followers and subscribers.  Hope you buy it, hope you like it, hope you write a nice review and tell your friends.

Enough said.

Cover Reveal: DESTINY BLUES

DESTINY-BLUES-FRONT-COVER-bFor those of you who have been with me a while, one of my early urban fantasy novels (working title FATE) is about to be published.  I just got a proof of the hard copy, and I confess I got a real thrill when I opened the box and picked it up for the first time.  I’ve been carrying it around with me everywhere.  I even got an e-book reader this week, so that when it’s published, I’ll be able to order it and carry it around in my purse!

As a writer whose output is generally limited to the digital plane, the sensory satisfaction I get from the feel of my own book in my hands is something that’s hard to describe.  It’s kind of like opening that birthday present from smelly old aunt Gertrude and discovering that instead of an ugly sweater, you’ve been given the keys to a magic kingdom.  You realize that maybe old Gertie wasn’t such a dreary sort after all…

July is Berry Good to ME!!!

mmmberries3

I moved back to the beautiful green landscape of Oregon eight months ago, and every day that passes I am gladder than ever that I made the decision to return.  However, since I haven’t lived here since I was a little kid, every season, month, and day feels like a new experience.

Case in point: the blackberries which hang over my neighbor’s fence are ripening in delightfully copious amounts. The thing that is difficult to get my head around is that in Oregon, blackberries are like crabgrass.  TheymmmBerries-071913 grow EVERYWHERE; from between cracks in the sidewalks to gutters on the roof.  Most people hate the prolific and thorny vines (which can penetrate even the thickest leather gloves) with a passion no less than Californians have for poison oak.

But I’m a glass-is-half-full sort of girl, and in this instance, I thank my lucky stars for the overflowing bounty from my neighbors.  This week I started harvesting juicy, sweet, blackberries.  By the second day, there was more than I could eat, and by the end of this week, I’ve got a gallon-sized baggie full of blackberries sitting in my freezer, and room for more.  Even the dogs are hanging out beneath the berry bushes, waiting for the next manna from heaven to drop.

I can’t wait until my neighbor’s apples ripen.  A couple more months, I think.
Then I’ll be baking apple-berry crisp (a favorite).  Right now, I’m making due with pie.  Mmmm, pie.

Minions, Fetch Me My Copyright Pen!

MiaFetch-071713  With publication comes paperwork, and today I’m talking about copyrights.

As a writer, I automatically own the rights of my original creative work (WARNING: I am NOT a lawyerRowanFetch-071713
or legal expert in any way.  I’m just relating my personal experience and beliefs here).   As a soon-to-be-published author, I want to protect my rights in the future, and thus this week, I applied for my first copyright.

It costs money to file the paperwork, but I consider it money well spent.  In fact, writing out the checks
made me feel like a real AUTHOR for the first time (I even got to check the ‘AUTHOR’ box on the application).

The only tough part was finding a black pen to fill out the form.  Thank goodness for minions.

Celebrate the Small Stuff

YAY-Hedgehog

I finished up the first draft of my new WIP last week.  It took me almost exactly 4 months from start to finish, although there was a total of three weeks during that time where I got no writing done on the manuscript at all because I was in a class (three classes, to be exact) or had house guests.

When it’s done, I expect my new manuscript to run around 100K pages, but this is my fourth novel, and I’m learning that I write my first draft extremely lean.  I’m more concerned about getting the story actions on the page than paying attention to descriptions, emotions, or thematic elements.  Like I did with FATE and GLAMOUR, I developed a pretty detailed outline for AURUM, but I also deviated quite a bit from the plan.

Finishing up the first draft of AURUM is something worth celebrating.  I feel good.  I plan to let the manuscript sit for a few weeks while I write a few short stories and finish up writing the follow-on novel to FATE.

In the meanwhile, I’m going to go to the movies, do a little retail therapy, and celebrate the feeling of having written.

Monday Funday – Kevin Hearne Book Signing

Kevin-Hearn-and-ME-at-Powel   Last night I went to a terrific book signing for Kevin Hearne and his latest book in the Iron Druid series, Hunted. I discovered this series a few years ago, and have been a faithful fan ever since.  The signing was held at Powells Books in Cedar Hills (Beaverton), which is less than 5 miles from me.

I had been to book signings before, but Kevin’s was definitely the most fun.  First of all, he’s a fun guy, and his passion for his writing and the world he’s built around the Iron Druid comes out in almost everything he says.  Rather than do the expected reading, he spent an hour answering every question the audience cared to ask.  And there was a pretty good crowd there, so there were a LOT of questions.  He also talked about a couple of stories he’s got coming out; one in Unfettered (along with Terry Brooks, Brandon Sanderson, Carrie Vaughn et. al.), and one in the upcoming Carniepunk anthology, due on July 23.

Glad I went.
